Where can it take your career?

The HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the latest nationally accredited unit of competency that describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. This course is perfect for learners who are or wants to become first aid officer or delegate in their workplace or use these skills in their personal life or commitments.

How is the course delivered?

Training is delivered via Blended (face-to-face and online distance learning).

Course Duration: This course is designed to be completed in up to 2 days.

Expected Study Hours: Typical learners are expected to spend approximately 18 hours depending on existing knowledge, skills, and experience.

What will you learn?

This course is designed to develop your expertise in providing first aid. Among others, you will learn to:

  • Respond to an emergency situation
  • Apply appropriate first-aid procedures
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Review the incident.

All learners will be assessed through the following methods:

  • Observation during role play/simulated assessments
  • Questioning, which may include self-assessment, verbal answers, written questionnaires, activity modules and interview
  • Structured Activities, which may include projects, case studies, presentations, role play, demonstration, and progressive tasks

Entry requirements

There are no prerequisites required to enter this course. However, it is preferred that students:

  • must be 18 years or older
  • Have sound language, literacy, and numeracy skills* (at least Year 10 English, or equivalent)
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Must have the physical capability to perform:
    • Bring themselves to floor level
    • At least two (2) minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (five (5) cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
    • At least two (2) minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (five (5) cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.
    • Manual handling tasks safely.

*Learners who do not meet the LLN requirements may still enrol into the course provided the enrolment has been endorsed by the trainer and corresponding additional support strategies have been put in place.

Resources required

To support you in your new course with Melvic College Australia, we will provide the following:

  • Training facilities with whiteboard and whiteboard equipment, tables, and chairs
  • HLTAID011 learning and assessment suite, which includes:
    • Learner guide
    • Assessment workbook
    • Template for projects and other activities
  • Equipment and supplies for training and assessment, including:
    • Adult and infant resuscitation manikins following ARC guidelines for the purpose of assessment of CPR procedures
    • adrenaline auto-injector training device
    • AED training devices
    • placebo bronchodilator and spacer device
    • different types of wound dressings and bandages
    • workplace first aid kit
    • blankets and items to treat for shock
    • personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • workplace injury, trauma and/or illness record, or other appropriate workplace incident report form.

To complete your course, you will need ongoing access to the following:

  • Computer/laptop with relevant software such as, but is not limited to the following:
    • Internet access, preferably through Google Chrome
    • MS Word and PowerPoint
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader

Learners may also consider additional training to complement their skills in providing first aid, with courses such as:

  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support*
  • HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting*
  • HLTAID013 Provide First Aid in remote or isolated site*
  • HLTAID014 Provide advanced First Aid*

*These courses are not offered by Melvic College Australia 

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

 

Due to the high-risk nature of this unit of competency, RPL is not offered. Refresher training in CPR must be carried out annually and first aid certifications must be renewed every three (3) years.
