The CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support (Release 3) is the latest nationally accredited qualification which reflects the role of support workers who complete specialised tasks and functions in aged services; either in residential, home or community-based environments. This course is perfect for learners who want to become individual support workers in the community, home or residential care setting.

How is the course delivered?

Training is delivered via Blended (Face-to-Face and Online Distance) + Vocational Placement.

Course Duration: This course is designed to be completed in up to 31 weeks (including holiday break).

Expected Study Hours: Typical learners are expected to spend approximately 1,210 hours depending on existing knowledge, skills, and experience.

What will you learn?

This course is designed to develop your expertise in providing aged services and support. Among others, you will learn to:

  • Facilitate the interests and rights of clients
  • Coordinate services for older people
  • Provide support to people living with dementia
  • Meet personal support needs
  • Support relationships with carers and families.

How is the course structured?

All learners will be assessed through the following methods:

  • Observation during on-the-job or role play/simulation
  • Questioning, which may include self-assessment, verbal answers, written questionnaires, activity modules and interview
  • Third-Party
  • Structured Activities may include projects, case studies, presentations, role play, demonstration, and progressive tasks

This qualification reflects the role of support workers who complete specialised tasks and functions in aged services; either in residential, home or community based environments. Workers will take responsibility for their own outputs within defined organisation guidelines and maintain quality service delivery through the development, facilitation and review of individualised service planning and delivery.

Entry requirements

There are no prerequisites required to enter this course. However, it is preferred that students:

  • must be 18 years or older
  • Have sound language, literacy, and numeracy skills* (at least Year 10 English, or equivalent)
  • Have basic computer skills

*Learners who do not meet the LLN requirements may still enrol into the course provided the enrolment has been endorsed by the trainer and corresponding additional support strategies have been put in place.

Resources required

To support you in your new course with Melvic College Australia, we will provide the following:

  • CHC43015 learning and assessment suite, which is made available through the student portal and includes:
    • Learner guides
    • Assessment workbooks
    • Templates for projects and other activities
    • Simulated resources to provide students with simulated assessment pathways (not applicable to all assessment tasks, especially those to be done during vocational placement)
  • Additional course readings and resources recommended by trainers.
  • Medical equipment and supplies for first aid training, including:
    • Adult and infant resuscitation manikins in line with ARC guidelines
    • Adrenaline auto-injector training device
    • AED training device
    • Placebo bronchodilator and spacer device
    • Blankets and items to treat for shock
    • Roller bandages
    • Triangular bandages
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Workplace first aid kit
    • Wound dressings

Vocational placement providers must allow access to:

  • Vocational workplace supervisor(s) to supervise and confirm candidate’s completion of the required tasks included in the Skills Workbook. The workplace supervisor must:
    • Have adequate knowledge and understanding of the provision of aged care
    • Have the ability to effectively supervise and manage aged care services
    • Have the necessary experience and qualification(s) in the area of individual support specialising in aged care (e.g., you have the relevant VET qualification/s, Certificate III in Individual Support specialising in Aged Care or higher)
  • Aged care clients, including:
    • Three (3) clients and access to their care plans
    • Two (2) clients living with dementia, their families and/or carers
    • Two (2) clients whom the student can provide with personal support care
    • Three (3) clients receiving palliative care
    • Two (2) clients with disability
    • Two (2) clients (and/or colleagues) from two (2) different cultural backgrounds
  • Clients’ individualised plans, health management plans, personal healthcare checklists, and personal healthcare diaries, where relevant to the clients’ needs
  • Clients’ families and/or carers
  • Organisational policies, protocols, and procedures including, but not limited to:
    • Work health and safety
    • Safe work practices
    • Manual handling
    • Infection control
    • Planning and service delivery (including templates and tools)
  • Organisational guidelines for abuse or neglect
  • Workplace equipment and resources normally used by care workers (i.e., as needed: patient hoists, standing lifter, wheelchair, other client assistive devices and mobility aids, and PPE)
  • Suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including information relating to peak bodies, network groups and web-based network services
  • Equipment for infection control, such as:
    • Hand hygiene facilities and equipment
    • Clinical and other waste and waste disposal equipment
    • Equipment for cleaning, including sterilised sharps, if relevant to the candidate’s role
  • Workplace to conduct a work health and safety inspection
  • Opportunities to participate in meetings and discussions with clients and colleagues, including but not limited to:
    • One (1) work health and safety meeting/debriefing
    • Continuous improvement meeting with the supervisor and at least one (1) colleague
    • Two (2) meetings, one for each client living with dementia and their families and/or carers
    • One (1) meeting with client and supervisor for the person-centred planning
    • Discussion with supervisor and/or colleagues relevant to student’s workplace performance.

To complete your course, you will need ongoing access to the following:

  • Computer/laptop with relevant software such as, but not limited to, the following:
    • Internet access preferably through Google Chrome
    • MS Word and PowerPoint
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader
    • Zoom video conferencing software
    • Webcam and headset with microphone
  • At least two (2) volunteers for various role-play activities

Provide first aid (HLTAID011):

Melvic College Australia facilitates its own workshop for this course. Learners do not need to find a separate course provider. The schedule may be moved as long as the First Aid course is completed before vocational placement.

Mandatory Vocational Placement:

Learners are required to undertake a minimum of 120 hours of vocational placement within a registered and approved aged care centre. This must occur after the student has satisfactorily completed all the other units/subjects in this qualification.

During this time, the learners are required to complete a skills workbook.

Learners have the option to:

  • Source their own Vocational Placement providers (Melvic College Australia to check suitability) or
  • Have Melvic College Australia assist them in arranging Vocational Placement providers near their area or
  • have their Vocational Placement under one of Melvic College Australia’s partner organisations.

Melvic College Australia will continuously look for and form partnerships with Aged Care providers in Victoria and in other states in the future.

Melvic College Australia will provide learners a Vocational Placement Pack that outlines all the requirements for finding a suitable Vocational Placement provider that will facilitate the required workplace assessments and allow the learner to complete the required vocational placement hours.

Learners are recommended to initiate contact with potential vocational placement providers as soon as enrolment is confirmed to allow sufficient time for Melvic College Australia to confirm the workplace’s safety and suitability.

Course Fees

This recognition may assist Learners to progress faster through a unit of competency, or allow the student full credit for a unit of competency.
